What’s a Boba Brew? It’s our version of Bubble Teas. There is a wide variety of Bubble Teas on the market today. And a LOT of variety in the way they are made. There’s also a lot of varying versions of how they came about. We could compile pages upon pages of information about Bubble Tea but we’ll just give a brief synopsis here.
Bubble tea originated in Taiwan in the 1980’s. One tea concession owner started adding flavors to the teas. These were shaken to mix the flavors well. The shaking produces bubbles which in turn led to it being dubbed “bubble tea”.
And then came the Tapioca Pearls. Tapioca pearls are made from starch from the cassava root. Also known as “boba”. The starch is extracted and made into translucent spheres called pearls. There are varying sizes of the pearls, as well as varying colors from clear to black (some are artificially colored). The black pearls we use get their color from brown sugar and are a little sweeter. They have a chewy texture in the center with a jelly-like exterior when cooked properly. The pearls really do not have any flavor of their own and any sweetness they may impart is due to sugar that may be added or a sugary syrup they are held in after cooking.
There are several stories about how tapioca pearls were introduced in this popular beverage. To sum up all the stories.....someone decided to add these chewy little pearls to tea as a fun and new topping for the flavored milk teas. These pearl milk teas were served cold over ice and quickly became a popular beverage.
In today’s market it is common for tea and coffee shops to offer a version of “bubble” teas. And there are mobile Bubble Tea Shops that specialize in these types of beverages. Many of these businesses have begun to use powdered mixes to create their bubbly drinks. These mixes are available in a variety of tea, coffee and fruit flavors. And most contain some form of a powdered non-dairy creamer. Having the various flavors in powdered form provide a quick, easy, economical way to offer a larger variety to customers.
But what makes ours different? Our process takes an extra minute or two but yields a brew that is as fresh and natural as possible. We only use fresh ingredients and flavor syrups with natural flavors. We do not use powdered non-dairy creamers or instant teas in our brews. All of our teas are brewed fresh for each cup. We use our own line of loose leaf teas. So we may have different flavors than seen with other companies. The coffee we use is cold brewed by a local roaster providing a lower acidic and smoother coffee. And the milk we use are real milks (whole, skim, half and half or heavy cream), not powdered. Milk alternatives that we use are almond, coconut or soy milk. No powdered non-dairy creamers used here. We also select flavor syrups that are made with natural flavors and sugar. No high fructose corn syrup or artificial sweeteners are used.
We call ours Boba Brews because we offer more than just tea with boba. And it’s fun to say. 😊 Boba is just another name for Bubble Tea. So come on and Tickle your tastebuds with one of our fun & delicious treats!!
We have not done any more work to the popup yet. We are hoping to begin in the fall. At this point we are looking into all the regulations and requirements so that we get it right the first time. We don't want to have to go back and redo anything. But we will keep updates posted here as we get started.
We picked up the popup camper this morning. YAY!!!! We're super excited to finally be getting it home to get started on it. We have a LOOOOOOONG way to go and it won't happen overnight. But, ya gotta start somewhere right????
So here's what we've got going on (pictures below). It's a 1988 Jayco Popup Camper. We were blessed to find one that was still sound structurally. This will save us much time and money in the long run. In the pictures you can see hubs has begun the deconstruction. He's pressure cleaned it a bit.....taken off the canvas and removed the cushions.
We've discussed the direction I want to go in for layout and design. The top edge is going to be raised up about 14" taller than it is now so that the counters are tall enough for me to work off of. The back side with the sink and gas stove, as well as the cabinets on the front side, will be removed completely and hubs will be building a custom counter and cabinet system. The sides will still be able to roll out to be used for whatever we need whether it be seating area, display area for donut bars, or DIY donut dipping party seating and workstations.

YAY!!!!!! We're super excited. We have found a PopUp Camper (thanks to a friend) that will soon be converted into our kettle on wheels. We have a long road ahead but we will get there. We will journal the journey here from picking it up next weekend to the actual work in progress to completion.
We were inspired to do the PopUp Camper conversion by another local business, actually. Soy Clever Candles has a mobile candle pour unit that is.........yep, you guessed it.......made from a popup camper. We have been talking with the folks at Soy Clever Candle Company for guidance and encouragement. So if you haven't heard of them, be sure to go to their site and check them out. And be sure to click on the Pour Bar option at the top navigation on their page to see their mobile pour bar. It's amazing. Ours will be similar in design but with a different look and feel.
